Aims

To introduce students to management principles, including the management of human resources and to give students the opportunity to learn how to use them in the management of tasks in tourism and leisure organisations.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Discuss appropriate theories and principles of management with contextualised reference to tourism and hospitality
2.
Synthesize, interpret, analyse and evaluate information and data relevant to understanding the key functions of tourism management

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Management styles and theories; leadership characteristics and team behaviour; management structures; activities and functions of management; monitoring and control of resources – sources of information, evaluation of information, quality systems, communication and recording systems; HR related issues; managing change within human resources – demographic changes, customer demand; the importance of customer service.
Additional Information:The report will require an analysis of management functions found within the student's placement organisation and related to appropriate theoretical perspectives.
