Aims

1. A theoretical and practical understanding of the tools required to examine dramatic texts, inspired by the work of Stanislavski and his followers. 2. An awareness and experience of the key repertoire explored through play readings and your own research. 3. A growing understanding of the skills and techniques required for sight-reading dramatic and non-dramatic texts, verse and prose.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Recognise, identify and demonstrate the skills and techniques required to breakdown a dramatic text in order to discover the narrative structure and clues about the characters. 

2.
Identify the appropriate techniques and demonstrate an ability to apply these in the performing of a rehearsed reading of a dramatic text. (Non-heightened text) 

3.
Recognise, identify, and demonstrate an application of, the skills required for sight- reading a variety of texts. 


Module Content

Outline Syllabus:1. An exploration of the key techniques required to examine the structure of a play to extract information about the 'world of the play', the characters and their relationships, and the author’s intentions. This will end in the performance of a rehearsed reading in which the students will share roles. 2. An examination of the techniques required for sight-reading both dramatic and non-dramatic texts, verse and prose. This will end in a sight-reading test in front of appropriate tutors. 3. An exploration of key repertoire. This will be explored through research, on-going presentations, play readings and watching plays both recorded and live. (This will be further enhanced by your work in Professional Studies 1 module)
Additional Information:The module enables students to examine texts and improve sight-reading skills. Assessment is via a rehearsed play and a sight-reading test.
