Aims
The aims of the module are to:
1. Understand the core knowledge of Music Theory as it applies to different styles of music.
2. Understand the use and application of music theory in music production and composition.
3. Understand the different terminologies used in music theory for different styles (popular music, jazz, classical).
4. Acquire the critical and analytical tools to evaluate and discuss music.
Learning Outcomes

Identify and use key elements of notation relevant to the different styles of music.
2.
Describe and demonstrate an applied understanding of the terminology used in music theory.
3.
Identify the values and the time signatures in both written and aural form.
4.
Identify and construct, intervals, keys, scales and elementary chords in both written and aural form
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Music Notation: Staff notation (clefs, pitches, accidentals) and chord based.
Values, Simple and Compound Time Signatures, subdivision.
Intervals, Key Signatures, Circle of Fifths.
Diatonic Scales: major and minors (natural, harmonic, melodic).
Chords construction: triads and 7th chords. Use of diatonic chords. Aural skills.
Performance directions and related vocabulary (repetitions, dynamics, agogics, phrasing, accents, fermatas).
