Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Exploration of social and environmental issues of prominence and interest at the time the module is taught utilising sociological analysis and imagination. A diversity of perspectives of modern life will be explored, with particular emphasis on those that challenge ‘common-sense assumptions’.
Topics which may be explored will vary and will include those such as: global green issues, environmental problems and prospects, ‘climate chaos’, poverty and inequality in the UK, stigmatisation of disabled people, food policy and problems, supermarket dominance, mental health issues, the arms industry, corporate power, sexuality, housing and homelessness, human-animal relations.
Additional Information:In this module we shall examine contemporary social and environmental issues of prominence to demonstrate the contribution of different sociological approaches to our understanding. It will become apparent that a key strength of sociology is its diverse and challenging interpretations of social and green issues.
