Aims

6. Explore factors which influence design;
7. Create a visual record to inform discussion; and
8. Gain an understanding of the contemporary design profession

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
During the module you will explore the origins of the design profession, the role of the designer and how it has and is changing.
All design is created and exists within a context and you will explore these contextual issues and the complex relationships between the designer, the design user and the design instigator.
You will explore the motivation behind design and its market consumption and the transition of the role of designer from serving industry to being an ambassador for design users. You will consider the current issues faced by designers in respect of mass-consumption, sustainability and inclusivity.
Through research you will examine how art and culture, born out of philosophical and social thinking, and coupled with scientific and technical advances, have influenced design, the design process, practitioners and the outputs and outcomes of
their design.

You will examine design in a variety of contexts gaining an awareness of the extent to which design considerations apply.
Working as individuals or as teams, you will be introduced to the complex process of design and the various methodologies and toolkits used by designers
You will examine products, applications and/or services and explore how to evaluate their design by considering the outputs and outcomes and how to critique them.
You will examine how trends impact on design and designers in addressing the markets for their services.
