Aims

This module will provide an introduction to the discipline of archaeology. Students will be introduced to the concepts of science based archaeology and cultural history with a regional focus on the archaeology of the British Isles. An introduction to archaeological fieldwork and GIS software will be provided.

Learning Outcomes

Identify and describe the basic categories of archaeological evidence and how these are recovered.
2.
Explain the main events of the archaeological record of the British Isles and its chronology.
3.
Recognise scientific approaches and how to apply them in order to solve problems.
4.
Develop a range of transferable employability skills in order to fully exploit learning opportunities in the field of scientific research at University and beyond by identifying and reflecting upon the following aspects of personal development: strengths and weaknesses, motivations and values, ability to work with others.

Outline Syllabus:Archaeology defined. Human interactions with the landscape. An introduction to the history of human material culture. Science-based archaeology. Introduction to excavation and archaeological field work, post-excavation analyses, GIS
