Aims

To convey to students an understanding of the institutional and constitutional framework of the European Union. The module is designed to enable students to develop an educated opinion of the nature of the EU public order; as well as gaining a good knowledge and understanding of the Unions fundamental doctrines, and of the mechanisms for the enforcement of the EU law and the protection of EU rights.

Learning Outcomes

Understand the function, history and nature of the EU public order.
2.
Analyse and critique the fundamental principles of the EU legal order.
3.
Critically appraise the enforcement and application of EU law in Member states legal systems.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:History of the EU The EU in the geopolitical context of Europe and of the wider world What is the EU and what does it do? The role and the powers of the EU. Institutions of the EU and sources of the EU Law. Is the EU democratic? Human rights and democracy in the EU Constitutional pillars 1: Supremacy of EU Law Constitutional pillars 2: Direct/indirect effect/state liability doctrines UK/EU Relations and Brexit including possible post-Brexit scenarios.
