Aims
To develop students’ knowledge of a range of approaches and perspectives on development and learning in the early years.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Name biological, environmental and cultural influences which impact on development in the early years
2.
Identify a range of factors which influence young children's physical, cognitive, social, emotional and moral development
3.
Explain the biological, social and motivational factors in children’s learning
4.
Discuss the contribution of some of the major theorists associated with development and learning in the early years

Outline Syllabus:Students will look at the underpinning principles and the contemporary practices in early years education which will include but will not be limited to the following:
• ‘Normal’ and ‘abnormal’ development in the early years
• Theoretical approaches to child development
• Cognitive development
• Social development
• Emotional development
• Moral development
• Physical development
• Neuroscience and early years development
• Young children’s learning
• Theories of learning
• Theories of motivation

This module develops your knowledge of a range of approaches and perspectives on development and learning in the early years. You will learn to name biological, environmental and cultural influences which impact on development in the early years, and identify a range of factors which influence young children's physical, cognitive, social, emotional and moral development.
