Aims

The aim of this module is to introduce early year’s students to key historical pioneers and how they influenced current practice. The module looks to develop student knowledge of the principles of early years education and their understanding of how these principles are applied by early educators (including parents).

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Students will look at the underpinning principles and the contemporary practices in early years education which will include but will not be limited to the following: The ideas of the ‘pioneers’ in early years education Deconstructing and defining play The curriculum in the UK and the other home nations Contemporary practice related ideas (including child initiated and adult directed activity, creative and open-ended activity) Rights of children
Module Overview:
This module introduces you to key historical pioneers and how they influenced current practice. The module looks to develop your knowledge of the principles of early years education and your understanding of how these principles are applied by early educators (including parents).
Additional Information:In this module there are opportunities for observational visits which support and enrich learning (these opportunities are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed). The presentation assignment involves the construction of a poster which will be displayed in a module ‘mini conference’ allowing peers to circulate and provide feedback. Posters are marked by the tutors. Opportunities for group and individual tutorials are embedded in this module.
