Aims

This module will enable students to gain an understanding of key concepts and issues related to the study of Education and Primary Studies through an exploration of children’s texts. Students will also explore the skills necessary for undertaking independent learning and study in higher education.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Identify how children’s texts are constructed and the value of children’s texts in relation to child development.
2.
Recognise the skills necessary for undertaking independent learning and producing academic work.
3.
Identify and reflect upon the following aspects of self-awareness in respect of personal development and career planning: strengths and weaknesses, motivations and values, ability to work with others.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Students will look at underpinning themes and theories of education in a number of contexts that will include, but will not be limited to, the following: - Introduction to how children’s texts are constructed to appeal to the child. - Representations of children and childhood in young children’s texts. - How texts teach what children learn - Quality children’s texts and child development - Academic reading and note-taking - Academic writing - Presentation skills -CareerSmart online module - Research and Academic Skills for the study of Education; Career and PDP planning (CareerSmart)
