Aims

1. To introduce students to the main research and theoretical positions that have focused on the relationship between media and crime. 2. To foster students' ability to evaluate and interpret media constructions and representations of crime, deviance and victimization. 3. To encourage students to reflect upon the role played by the media in constructing and representing crime and victimisation.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
• Theorising media and crime • Media constructions of crime, deviance and victimisation (power, ideology, language and discourse) • Infotainment • Moral panics • Media representations of crime, deviance and victimisation (representations of race, gender, class, victimisation); • Imagery and newsworthiness
Module Overview:
This module will introduce you to the main research and theoretical positions that have focused on the relationship between media and crime. Throughout the module you will have opportunities to improve your ability to evaluate and interpret media constructions and representations of crime, deviance and victimization. This will encourage you to reflect upon the role played by the media in constructing and representing crime and victimisation.
Additional Information:
This module aims to achieve two things: • First, it will address and guide students through theories and concepts of media and crime. • Second, drawing on newspaper articles, news programmes, films, documentaries and new media, this module will encourage students to examine how discourses and images construct realities and shape our understanding of crime and deviance, reproducing systems of domination and power.
