Aims

To introduce students to key concepts and debates in the philosophy and sociology of education To provide students the opportunity to apply these to debates about the role of education in society.

Learning Outcomes

Identify the contribution of key influential philosophers of education

Explain key arguments and debates within the philosophy and sociology of education including inequalities in the Education system.
3.
Recognise key sociological theories about the role of education in society

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Thinking philosophically about education, including its aims and purposes ‘Classical’ philosophers and the relevance of their work for education (e.g. Plato, Aristotle) ‘Modern’ philosophers of education (e.g. Rousseau, Dewey, Freire) Key debates in educational philosophy, e.g. education and autonomy, education and morality, the nature of knowledge and its implications for education Influential theories about the role of education in society, e.g. Marxist, functionalist and feminist perspectives key debates and theories in the sociology of education, e.g. labelling social mobility habitus wastage the reproduction of social inequality the hidden curriculum
Module Overview:
This module introduces you to key concepts in the philosophy and sociology of education, as applied to issues in the relationship between education and society. It is one of three modules at Level 4 designed to provide you with a good grounding in the four disciplines of the history, philosophy, sociology and psychology of education.
