Aims
1. Introduce students to the roles, agencies and institutions key to the operation of the Criminal Justice System.
2. Outline the decision-making mechanisms and how the Criminal Justice System operates in practice.
3. Consider the range of possible outcomes arising from involvement with the Criminal Justice System and the impacts of this for individuals, groups and communities.
Learning Outcomes

Describe the historical development of the main institutions of the criminal justice system.
2.
Identify and explain the governance, roles and structure of agencies involved in crime control, adjudication and sentencing.
3.
Describe and assess the main forms of sentencing and out-of-court disposal considering their critiques and possible alternatives.
4.
Examine the formal and informal factors influencing justice processes.

Outline Syllabus:
This module will deliver a series of lectures and related workshops that include an introduction to the main institutions of the criminal justice system and related concepts and issues. Examples of possible content include: Crime Prevention and Community Safety The Police and Policing Courts and Sentencing The Prison Service The Probation Service Youth Justice Restorative Justice Miscarriages of Justice
