Aims

To provide an understanding of the contextual learning experiences that enhance professional development within PE. Students will be introduced to the value of occupational socialisation (acculturation phase) from within the PE teacher socialisation framework. Through a combination of theoretical and practical learning environments students will be able to identify personal and professional areas for development. Work related learning tasks and opportunities, with primary school aged children, will support students’ ability to plan, deliver and evaluate a range of high-quality practical sessions. Students will have the opportunity to share, reflect and discuss learning experiences through peer learning groups and through the development of the primary school community and network.

Identify the key contextual experiences that influence occupational socialisation during the acculturation phase of PE education.

Recognise personal and professional attributes required for the development of PE teaching efficacy

Deliver a range of high-quality practical activities to primary school aged pupils

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Theoretical understanding of occupational socialisation: Self-efficacy and social learning experiences (Bandura) Acculturation phase of the PE socialisation framework and contextual experiences gained prior to university: Why are these important influences and what are they? (Lawson) Identification of personal and professional areas for development: PE teaching efficacy audit, target setting and review, employability skills, SWOT analysis Knowledge and understanding of the PE National Curriculum: Key stages 1 – 2 Planning to teach in the primary school setting: Lesson planning, teaching and learning approaches, inclusive practice, classroom management, practical subject knowledge and development, health and safety. Delivery of a range of practical activities to primary school children (x 4): Reflection and evaluation of lesson plans and delivery to primary school children Peer learning / workshop activities: Reflection, discussion and assignment preparation Skills audit and review: Target setting and future aims; PE teaching efficacy
