To introduce students to key concepts about how people learn To engage students in key debates relating to the psychology of education

Learning Outcomes

Identify influential theories about how people learn and key developments in learning theory.

Describe important concepts in the psychology of education.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The nature of learning Deconstructing learning and learning behaviour Influential theories about how people learn, e.g. Piaget, Vygotsky, Bruner Developments in learning theory, e.g. situated learning and communities of practice, the emergence of ‘learning styles’ The nature of ‘intelligence’ and its role in learning Children’s social and emotional development Educational transitions Learning cultures and the learning environment Societal shifts and their impact on learning, e.g. Changes to familial structure The increase of mass media Advances in technology Environmental awareness Introduction to pedagogy and supporting learners
Module Overview:
This module is designed to introduce you to key concepts in the psychology of education, particularly as they relate to learning. In addition, it offers you the opportunity to explore how changes in culture and society have impacted on the nature of learning. The module is one of three modules at Level 4 introducing you to key concepts in the four disciplines of history, sociology, psychology and philosophy of education.
