Aims
1. To introduce students to interdisciplinary perspectives on reading and interpreting literary and other texts within the cultural/historical moment of their production, through working on primary materials, and on critical and contextual writing.
2. To assist students to develop in a self-reflective way a range of core skills essential to successful study at university level (including study, numerical, team-working and presentational skills).
3. To introduce them to standard academic practice in written presentation.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Apply a broad knowledge base derived from an understanding of some of the methods and concepts necessary to reading texts in the context of their production.
2.
Show evidence of achievement in, and reflection on, the development of core study, numerical, presentation, and team-working skills.
3.
Present written work which meets accepted academic standards of presentation and referencing.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:1. Analysis and comparison of British literary and other texts c. 1948-60, exploring themes such as the post-war fracturing of class boundaries, immigration and the origins of multi-cultural society, and the rise of youth culture.
2. Participation in a Group Presentation, involving collective research and presentation on a theme related to the subject of the module.
3. Completion of a series of tasks throughout the module to gain familiarity with basic bibliographical and library skills; and the synthesising and referencing of secondary debates.
4. Tutorial sessions with designated Personal Tutor in order to reflect upon personal development as well as feedback received after completion of the WoW Bronze Certificate.
