Aims
1. To introduce students to a range of research methods used in criminological research, and their strengths and weaknesses
2. To introduce students to the relationship between research, policy, and practice through the use of case studies based upon researchers' and practitioners' own experiences
3. To emphasise the politicised nature of criminological research alongside the ethical and methodological challenges faced by criminological researchers
Learning Outcomes
1.
Understand and review the most appropriate quantitative-qualitative research methods for criminological research and investigation.
2.
Communicate the benefits and drawbacks of employing quantitative and/or qualitative research methodologies and techniques in criminology.
3.
Demonstrate an understanding of the political, ethical and methodological dilemmas posed by criminological research with reference to research conducted by departmental experts.

Module Overview:
This module introduces you to the themes, concepts and practices involved in research that you will develop at Level 5 and put into practice at Level 6. You will be introduced to a range of research methods used in criminological research, and to the relationship between research, policy, and practice through the use of case studies based upon researchers' and practitioners' own experiences.
