Aims
To develop students’ understanding of the foundations of midwifery practice throughout the childbirth continuum with a focus on the holistic needs of women and families.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Identify the individual aspects of the childbirth continuum
2.
Demonstrate knowledge of how women are supported during the physical, psychological and emotional changes of the childbirth continuum.
3.
Recognise how socio-cultural factors impact on women’s experiences within maternity services.
4.
Explain how the midwife provides care alongside the multi professional team in relation to women, families and their support networks.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Contraception, pre-conception care, sexual health, early pregnancy loss, antenatal care, the anatomy and physiology of labour and birth, anatomy of the fetal skull, optimal fetal positioning, supporting normal birth, simulation of normal birth, place of birth, water birth, hypno-birth, postnatal care, pelvic health, communication, continuity of care, alternative therapies, cultural competency, diversity, informed choice/consent, human rights, professionalism, role of the midwife in supporting women, the role of policy, protocol and guidelines.

Additional Information:The module will enable student midwives to gain an understanding of the multi-faceted and changing needs of women along the childbirth continuum. It will introduce the role of the midwife as an autonomous professional and the role alongside the multi-disciplinary team to plan, evaluate and advocate for women. This module is aligned to BFI standards.
Through formative and summative learning and teaching, students will be enabled to consider provision of maternity services.
