To introduce students to the roles, functions, features and operations of ports

Recognise the economic and logistics roles of ports

Identify the various types of port facilities and services, and distinguish between terminal operational systems
3.
Discuss the key factors influencing the design of a port terminal

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Economic and logistics roles of ports – ports as facilitators of international trade; ports as national and regional economic drivers; ports as logistic chain providers Global port industry –categorisation of ports; global port geography and competition in the industry; global terminal operators; port customers and other interested parties; contemporary issues in the port industry Port functions – services and facilities – harbour and shore-side services to vessels; cargo handling, storage and receipt / delivery functions; infrastructure and superstructure provision; landlord functions and related activities Terminal Logistics – throughput, capacity and area calculations; cargo handling systems and requirement estimations; berth configurations; layout of storage facilities and other superstructure; vehicle, equipment and people flows; hinterland connections
