Aims
1. To introduce students to academic literacy and the more specialised demands of media cultural and communication research.
2. To introduce students to the key approaches, issues, theoretical concepts and debates in the study of lived culture.
3. To introduce students to a range of key debates and approaches to study of media, culture and communication.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Analyse a given case study using investigative strategies appropriate for cultural studies.
2.
To identify and reflect upon the following aspects of self-awareness in respect of personal development and career planning: strengths and weaknesses, motivations and values, ability to work with others.
3.
Understand the social and political environment which shapes media and cultural texts and practices and from this basis respond to popular debate about the value and function of popular culture.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Introduction to academic practice and purpose, Introduction to the analysis of culture; the study of lived culture; debates about the 'popular'; cultural policy. Work-related learning; The significance of socio-cultural factors such as race, class and gender in shaping cultural practices.

What exactly is 'culture? How have people defined it, or made judgements about it? Why is it important to our everyday lives? How have researchers tried to study culture and what it means to people? This module aims to answer these questions!

Additional Information:Studying culture introduces students to debates about culture and its meaning. The module focuses upon a number of case studies in contemporary cultural practice and asks students to demonstrate their findings through a variety of group and independent assessment strategies.
