Aims
To equip students with the knowledge of how media law and regulation will affect the day-to-day work of journalists in a variety of roles
To give students an understanding of the many ethical issues which confront journalists in their day-to-day work and their impact on society
To provide students with the skills necessary work in the media within legal and ethical frameworks
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate knowledge of the legal system, the courts processes, terminology and hierarchy of the courts
2.
Recognise the general principles and application of key laws affecting journalists including defamation, contempt of court, confidentiality and copyright
3.
Explain the ethical frameworks established by industry codes and how they apply to key issues facing journalists
4.
Apply the provisions of regulatory codes to particular scenarios and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of honouring the spirit of the codes as well as specific provisions.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Basic knowledge of the English legal system, including of court processes the hierarchy of the courts; Contempt of court and related matters; the rules of the court protecting anonymity in the reporting of children and sexual offences; defamation and related matters; copyright; privacy and confidentiality; regulation – the role of the Editors' Code and the Broadcast Code; ethics in newsgathering – including reporting children and vulnerable people; protecting journalists' sources and the right to report.
