Aims

1. Integrate relevant theoretical approaches related to the study of sports journalism.. 2. Contextualise the development of sports journalism and the historic aspects that have shaped the role today. 3. Critically analyse how sports journalism deals the issues such as homophobia, gender and race. 4. Identify relevant examples of how national identity and issues of nationalism are presented within certain aspects of sports media. 5. Communicate both verbally and in written form on a range of themes that have relevance to sports journalism and the wider society.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:This module is intended to introduce journalism students to the key theoretical approaches to the study of sports journalism, and to stimulate reflection on the role of sports journalists in wider society. The module will look at how sports journalism has developed with a look at the historical aspects of the development of the role through to the present and how it is developing in relation to the wider media landscape.
Module Overview:
This module will integrate relevant theoretical approaches related to the study of sports journalism. You will analyse how sports journalism deals the issues such as homophobia, gender and race. You will also be able to Identify relevant examples of how national identity and issues of nationalism are presented within certain aspects of sports media.
Additional Information:The module will cover aspects of critical theory looking at how sport covers issues such as race and gender, as well as the nature of sports reporting that seeks to represent a perceived national identity. Overall the module seeks to connect the acquisition of practical skills to a wider cognitive and critical approach, focusing on issues such as narrative frameworks, news values, and journalistic discourse
