Aims

  1. To introduce students to the study of film through the formal properties and techniques of the medium.
  2. To analyse the stylistic and narrative dimensions of films through a study of formal properties and techniques of the medium.
  3. To introduce the basic elements of academic essay writing.

Learning Outcomes

Identify and analyse characteristic film techniques.

Understand the ways in which techniques are used to produce aesthetic effects.
3.
Write essays in an appropriate academic manner.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Through lectures and workshops students will gain an understanding of the key techniques in Film Language (Mise-en-scene, Sound and Music, cinematography, Editing) and an appreciation of narrative and narration in film.
Module Overview:
In studying film language students will gain key foundational skills in practising in textual analysis in relation to film.
