This module aims to provide students with an introduction to law and policy making in public and environmental health

Assess key historical developments in public and environmental health law and policy

Explain the role of law and policy in the protection of environmental and public health

Discuss a contemporary public/ environmental health problem & describe policy responses to this problem

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Concept analysis - what is law, policy and governance The legal system: UK and EU Law Understanding policy making and core influences of policy development Understanding legislation: Environmental health legislation The historical development of environment and public health policy and governance The environment, public health, disease and poverty The welfare state and social policy The rise of biomedicine and modern health systems The New Public Health and Healthy Public Policy Contemporary Environmental and Public Health Concerns: Alcohol; Housing; local environment and leisure spaces; Obesity and Diet; Tobacco Control; food safety
Module Overview:
This module aims to introduce you to the development of environmental and public health policy and governance since the 19th century. You will explore the historical development of public and environmental health governance from the Sanitary Reforms (1800's) through to modern day concerns such as Alcohol Use, Tobacco Control and Housing. The basic concepts of English law are introduced and aspects of the legal system are explored in relation to public and environmental health.
