Aims

The module is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to develop their potential as songwriters in a variety of settings. The module aims to develop a sense of structural and stylistic awareness and will lead to the recording and notated presentation of completed songs.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Write songs to specific briefs employing frequently encountered song structures and demonstrating basic arranging skills.
2.
Present songs in demo format with supporting documentation including a 'lead sheet'.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The creation and use of lyrics in song, and their relationship to melody, harmony and arrangement will be the focus of study. Students will also be encouraged to develop strategies to write in a variety of contexts.
Module Overview:
Students undertake a number of songwriting tasks which combine to create a portfolio of assessed work.
