Aims
This module aims to cultivate the knowledge and skills required to study at university level in English. The course supports the development of students’ English language as well as their academic skills including note-taking from lectures and reading; source selection, analysis and referencing; paraphrasing and summarising; planning and writing assignments; participating in seminar discussions and class debates and preparing for and undertaking an academic exam. It further aims to improve the current English language proficiency of students undertaking the module.
Learning Outcomes

- Accuracy and clarity of writing: the word, the sentence, the paragraph, tenses,
abbreviations, visual data
- Writing critically
- Academic style and the academic word list
- Listening skills and strategies
- Introduction to seminar skills
- Reading critically and conducting research
- Note-taking techniques for reading and listening
- Understanding and avoiding plagiarism, using Turnitin
- Engaging with the Visual Learning Environment
- Paraphrasing and summarising
- Preparing for and delivering academic presentations with PowerPoint
- Referencing and citation

Delivery
4 timetabled classes per week
2 timetabled tutorials per semester
12 Workshops per semester
Learning Hours
Students will spend 110 hours in direct contact with their tutor(s), and further 90 hours studying independently.
Assessment
Assessments take place after teaching concludes in Week 12. Tests include Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. For Reading, students will be presented with an academic text and requested to take certain tasks using skimming and scanning techniques, while for Listening, students will listen to lectures, take notes and identify main and specific information. For Speaking, students will contribute to a seminar discussion, and for Writing, they submit a researched essay.
Listening Exam: Worth 20% of the overall assessment
Reading Portfolio: Worth 30% of the overall assessment
Speaking Portfolio: Worth 20% of the overall assessment
Writing Portfolio: Worth 30% of the overall assessment
All skills need to be successfully passed by at least 40% for students to exit the course.
