Aims

This module aims to cultivate the knowledge and skills required to undertake essential academic tasks including: note-taking from lectures and reading; source selection, analysis and referencing; paraphrasing and summarising; planning and writing assignments; participating in seminar discussions and class debates; and preparing for and undertaking an academic exam. It further aims to improve the current English language proficiency of students undertaking the module.

Learning Outcomes

Develop strategies for listening to academic discourse

Take a positive role in class discussion, showing evidence of preparation and effective participation in groups

Make notes based on readings and listening to academic lectures and presentations

Produce a piece of academic writing showing understanding of the conventions in relation to style, structure, academic language and grammar

Manage study time and deadlines effectively

Use a range of appropriate grammatical features in all skill areas

Develop skills and strategies commensurate with a level 3 programme of study at LJMU

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:- Introduction to academic conventions and expectations - Learning to listen and participate in lectures and seminars - Selection and analysis of academic source material - Note-taking and note-making at university to avoid plagiarism - Introducing paraphrasing, summarising and referencing - Developing organisation and planning skills - Learning subject-specific language and skills - Academic writing: vocabulary, structure and style - Academic writing: styles and forms of assessment - Using technology to conduct and present research - Preparing for and writing in exams
Additional Information:The Academic English skills module will be mapped against current UKVI requirements to ensure that students are able to demonstrate competencies at B2 of the Common European Framework of References for Language. Grading and assessment will also be benchmarked against the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS).
