Aims

Develop English communication skills for clarity and accuracy at word, sentence, paragraph and short text level. Raise awareness of the range of study skills required for successful UK HE study, including the process of writing, reading strategies, seminar skills, organisation of time and materials, meeting deadlines and responding to feedback. Develop skills in the selection and correct attribution of source materials, the planning and production of extended pieces of academic writing, and the application of useful academic comparison and cause/effect analysis. Formulate note-taking strategies and engagement with texts on a variety of levels. Demonstrate clarity, accuracy of expression and functional language in more extended written and spoken output, and to further develop levels of comprehension of lectures and written sources. Encourage students to build on the progress they have made in all areas of communication, including the finer points of academic style, cohesion, clarification and definition. Apply academic and study skills to a standard effectively preparing students for entry to a Level 4 programme

Learning Outcomes

1.
Use a broad active reading vocabulary to read with a large degree of independence, adapting style and speed of reading to different texts and purposes.

Express yourself clearly and without much restriction, maintaining good grammatical control, with appropriate style and register realised.
3.
Follow the essentials of lectures, talks, reports and other forms of academic/professional presentation which are propositionally and linguistically complex.
4.
Write a linguistically complex essay in response to a specific question, synthesising and evaluating information and arguments from a number of sources.
5.
Take effective notes on a complex and unfamiliar text, presentation or lecture.
6.
Interpret and evaluate relevant information and ideas.
7.
Contribute to a group discussion even when the speech is fast and colloquial.
8.
Research and plan written tasks effectively, identifying and incorporating reliable and relevant source materials.
9.
Give a well-structured, detailed academic presentation on a given subject.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:- Introduction to reading at university: analysing purpose, matching reading strategy to purpose, evaluating source material, recording sources - Accuracy and clarity of writing: the word, the sentence, the paragraph, tenses, abbreviations, visual data - Writing critically - Academic style and the academic word list - Listening skills and strategies - Introduction to seminar skills - Reading critically - Conducting research - Note-taking techniques for reading and listening - Understanding and avoiding plagiarism, using Turnitin - Engaging with the Visual Learning Environment - Paraphrasing and summarising - Preparing for and delivering academic presentations with PowerPoint - Referencing and citation
Module Overview:
In this module you will develop your English language communication skills to a level that will allow you to succeed in your degree programme.
Additional Information:AES module assessment is mapped against UKVI requirements to enable students to demonstrate competencies at B2 of the Common European Framework of References (CEFR) for Languages. AES grading and assessment is also benchmarked against the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Such mapping requires an increased number of learning outcomes to be met by students and assessment of all four language skills: speaking, reading, writing and listening.
