Aims

This module will explore the ways in which children and childhood can be defined and viewed. The module aims to examine perspectives and debates through consideration of the representation of children and childhoods from historical, political and socio-cultural contexts.

Learning Outcomes

Explore historical, political and socio-cultural perspectives related to ideas of childhood

Discuss representations of childhood

Reflect on some competing perspectives and debates about how children and childhoods are 'seen' in wider society

Outline Syllabus:-Historical depictions of children and childhood -Constructions of children and childhood -Children, childhood and the internet -Child protection and safeguarding -Representations of children in a range of media Race, gender, disability and sexuality (intersectionality) and childhood -Children's voice and rights -Policy and legislation relating to children and young people -Children at work and play -The child as consumer

Additional Information:This module will be offered for all students on the Foundation Year in education and early childhood studies.
