Aims
To enable the candidate to demonstrate the capability to produced work of sufficient quantity and quality to suggest that he or she can achieve the standard required for a PhD i.e. the ability to produce work that makes an original contribution to knowledge.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Conceptualise, design and implement an original investigation project for the generation of new knowledge, applications or understanding at the forefront of engineering and adjust the project design accordingly in the light of unforeseen problems
2.
Systematically acquire and understand knowledge at the forefront of the discipline and critically appraise its application to the project
3.
Originality in the application of knowledge to the problem with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in the discipline
4.
Ability to communicate ideas and conclusions clearly and effectively to specialist and non-specialist audiences
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Tutorial sessions with the supervisor (and where appropriate the supervisory team) will support the candidates research activity.
Module Overview:
To enable the candidate to demonstrate the capability to produced work of sufficient quantity and quality to suggest that he or she can achieve the standard required for a PhD i.e. the ability to produce work that makes an original contribution to knowledge. The Transfer Report and oral examination are designed to establish that the student a) understands the problem; b) is aware of the associated literature; c) has demonstrated capability to conduct the research; d) has a realistic research plan and schedule and e) can deliver research outputs at Doctoral level.
