Aims
The module aims to equip students with the research skills necessary to undertake their dissertation project, including the preparation of a research proposal or business case for the activity (depending on the academic/industrial context), consideration of ethical and legal issues, literature review, oral and written presentation skills and project management.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Search, critically analyse and summarise published research in the disciplines of Computer Science, and identify relevant Legal, Social, Ethical and Professional Issues associated with published research.
2.
Execute an independent piece of academic research and demonstrate how critical analysis of advanced scholarship and published research can be used to develop a project that contributes to academic or professional knowledge and understanding.
3.
Write a successful research proposal which outlines and evaluates the research process and method(s) most appropriate to investigate the student's own research question/subject, and identify relevant Legal, Social, Ethical and Professional Issues related to the proposed project.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Research principles and design;
Identifying research issues and developing research questions;
Identifying Legal, Social, Ethical and Professional Issues related to computing and computing research;
Literature searching, reviewing and citation;
Research planning: writing project proposals, time management, costing; Qualitative and Quantitative methods and data analysis;
Project Management, Dissertation and report writing.
Additional Information:This module provides generic and specific research methods skills, which will help equip the student for the project dissertation module and also for possible future research career.
