Aims

To examine existing procurement options and their effectiveness in meeting the client's requirements. To examine sustainable construction and the development of procurement strategies which address sustainable construction principles.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Analyse procurement options for building and engineering works and examine the allocation of risk within these options
2.
Critically evaluate potential procurement options for given business and project objectives.
3.
Analyse the construction supply chain and evaluate the roles of the parties and their contractual relationships under traditional and non-traditional variants, during the procurement process.
4.
Critically review the concepts and the applications of sustainable development and sustainable construction and their integration within the procurement process
5.
Critically review and analyse the barriers, the enablers and the drivers of sustainable procurement

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Traditional Procurement, Design and Build, Management Contracting, PFI, Prime Contracting, Partnering and Framework Agreements; Models of construction procurement including cost led procurement, integrated project insurance and two stage open book; contract types including lump sum, unit rate, target cost and cost reimbursable contracts; tendering procurement decision making. Supply chain management; risk management and allocation of design, construction, finance risks between the client and the contractor within the different procurement options; stakeholders analysis; value management; quality management. Definitions and applications of sustainability; sustainable construction, social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable construction/sustainable procurement; integration of sustainable construction within procurement strategies; enablers and barriers of sustainable construction procurement
Additional Information:The module develops the students' ability to provide advice for construction clients and contractors in relation to both procurement and sustainability issues at the organisation and the project levels.
