Aims
To provide opportunities for professionals in education to:
- Further extend their knowledge and understanding of practitioner research approaches in education
- Develop an empirical evidence base for the analysis of theory and practice and the application of research methodologies appropriate to the nature of the identified area
- Design, plan and construct a research proposal

Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Research paradigms: the nature of educational/professional research activity and its relationship to concepts of professionalism, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, case study, action research and other approaches.
Ethical issues in researching professional practice.
Selected research methods (design of research instruments and analysis and interpretation) drawn from the following:
- The use of literature and other documentary evidence
- Selected statistical techniques including consideration of the use of quantitative surveys/questionnaires
- The use of surveys/questionnaires to collect qualitative data
- The use of interviews/focus groups
- The use of observation techniques
- Issues related to validity, reliability, objectivity and subjectivity
- Approaches to reporting and disseminating research
Additional Information:This module is delivered as part of a fully Online Programme. It provides a grounding in theory, research and practice for educational professionals with an interest in developing their capabilities for critical reflection on an aspect of practice, their understanding of wider research approaches and their ability to produce a research proposal for an appropriate level 7 Dissertation.
