Aims

The dissertation unit is the largest module, in terms of credit value within the LLM, and is designed to enable students to conduct a professional master’s level research project. The final project will entail independent study and exercise of appropriate research techniques, including the use of source materials. This may consist of critical evaluation of particular approaches or techniques, or alternatively a limited piece of original or empirical research. It will build on the foundation provided within the previous modules and the first component of this unit; research methods best practice. It may also involve; the fuller development of subject matter and techniques encountered in the taught programme, or instead the exploration of new ideas and techniques appropriate to the overall programme of study. Students are encouraged to identify and use appropriate research methods and skills. This module requires students to relate concepts and principles to empirical evidence, encouraging critical appreciation of both techniques and evidence.
