Aims

1. To think globally and comparatively about social policy and its connections with crime, harm and (in)justice 2. To develop a critical understanding of the ways in which the economic, political and cultural milieu intersect with crime, harm and (in)justice 3. To participate in on-line fieldwork, internet based research, and communities of practice for digital scholarship.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a critical understanding of the manner in which different economic, political and cultural contexts interact and interconnect with crime, harm and justice
2.
Critically evaluate how states both facilitate and regulate crime, harm and justice within the context of processes of globalization and social policy
3.
Identify an area of social policy, conduct on-line fieldwork, present and critically reflect upon research through the lens of an international case-study

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:• Introduction to global, comparative and international criminology and social policy • Debates over the nature of globalisation and its consequences for social policy, social well-being and social divisions • Key social policy issues addressing welfare, crime, penal systems, trade liberalisation: may include poverty, inequality, health, work, labour standards, health and safety, environmental justice, migration and illicit drugs • Digital networks for learning and research
Additional Information:This module provides students with the opportunity to develop their outlook on international policy analysis and policy development within governments, NGOs and third sector organisations around the globe. A key feature of the module is the focus on key social policy issues aligned to national welfare states, penal systems and environmental justice for example. How these policy concerns intersect with crime, harm and in(justice) and play out within the crucible of globalisation occupies a central place within this module.
