Aims

To critically assess the social, economic and political forces that shape contemporary Asia-Pacific To understand the trajectories of state-formation of major powers in the region, such as China, Japan, Korea and the Southeast Asia To critically examine the longue durée history that has produced the international politics of the region To explore variegated developmental forces, such as social revolution and economic reforms in different countries that have shaped the region To critically evaluate the region’s role in world politics.

Outline Syllabus:Introduction: Asia-Pacific as region Two Reforms: Genesis of the short twentieth century of Asia Settling the Pacific War I: Communist China, the Korean War and Containment Settling the Pacific War II: Southeast Asia and the Crisis of Vietnam Southeast Asia and the War in Vietnam Tripolarity and the Dissolution of Cold War Development: Tigers, Dragons and Growth The US in Asia-Pacific The Rise of China Japan: A bitter normalisation
Additional Information:The module is designated to steer the students to apply general understanding of international relations to analysing a particular region in world system. It will take a critical look at IR theories from regional and empirical points of view, but also, it brings history and realities together into some common analytical frameworks. The objective of the module is to enable the students to analyse contemporary issues of the Asia-Pacific region and be able to pinpoint its significance in world politics, so the module will be taught by closely engaging provocative debates on contemporary events, headlines and widest media coverage of the region.
