Aims

To develop and test students' ability to prepare a dissertation based on a study in appropriate depth, of a subject of some significance in relation to their own discipline.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Formulate a research question/problem and devise an appropriate methodology of investigation.
2.
Gather, present, analyse and interpret appropriate information in relation to the chosen research question/problem.
3.
Synthesise findings and draw conclusions around the research question/problem.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The dissertation will normally comprise 15,000 to 18,000 words (in design based topics that include a substantial drawn element that figure may be reduced) and will contain a careful explanation of the research question/problem; a review of the relevant literature; an explanation of the research methodology; descriptions, analysis and synthesis of carefully prepared evidence.  This evidence will include both the selection and evaluation of relevant published material, together with some gathering of evidence from secondary sources.
Seminars will support the development of the research proposal and final submission. Tutorials will be supervision to help guide the student through the process with an allocated Supervisor.
Written guidance is issued to students prior to the commencement of the dissertation preparation process.  Students are counselled regarding their choice of topic and an appropriate supervisor allocated.  A full research proposal must be submitted.
During the period of dissertation preparation students are advised to keep in regular contact with their supervisor. 
N.B: Students must undertake their dissertation within their chosen field of specialised study.
Additional Information:
The module develops and tests the ability to prepare a dissertation based on a study in appropriate depth, of a subject of some significance in relation to the student's chosen discipline.  Dissertation preparation normally takes place after completion of the Postgraduate Diploma stage.
