Aims

The aim of this module is to provide the student with the opportunity, at Masters level, to develop and enhance skills, practical knowledge and directly applicable understanding of the technical and creative skills of voice and movement for the actor.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Reflect upon, elucidate and demonstrate a critically evaluated and synthesized understanding of the holistic nature of acting and performance (Voice – Speech – Movement) 

2.
Reflect upon, elucidate and demonstrate a critically evaluated and synthesized understanding of the creative and communicative power and potential of Movement in acted performance; and the ability in practice to employ and deploy Movement so as to realize character and narrative in performance
3.
Reflect upon, elucidate and demonstrate a practically evaluated understanding of health and fitness for the actor and the ability to apply appropriately body management and injury prevention techniques.
4.
Reflect upon, elucidate and demonstrate a critically evaluated understanding of the vocal and physiological processes deployed by the actor in rehearsal and performance, and the utilization of a range of practical, creative and imaginative strategies for the development and maintenance of the Voice.
5.
Reflect upon, elucidate and demonstrate the ability appropriately to create and communicate character, emotion, thought and narrative through clear, precise, considered and creative use of the Voice in performance 


Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Voice Through this module, the student will build on their prior understanding of the actors voice and enhance its use for theatre and performance. A particular focus will be on ensuring safe and sustainable practice. Students will explore posture, breathing, alignment, relaxation, rhythm and the development of resonance. The students will be asked to explore the poetic and rhetorical devices of complex, and heightened texts, discovering vocal processes and methods to develop clarity, expression and character influenced by Linklater, Estill, Berry and Fitzmaurice techniques. Movement Through this module students will explore the physicality of performance. Initially students will explore correct alignment, placement and core stability. Building on from this, the student will start to explore the creative potential of the actor to tell story and enhance character through movement. Students will be introduced to Laban movement techniques and animal studies. The movement element of the module will conclude with a short staff led physical movement based chamber performance
Additional Information:The module enables advanced exploration of voice and movement skills for the actor. Assessment is via two practical performance projects.
