Aims

This module aims to equip students with the research skills necessary to conduct and critically evaluate psychology research, including the systematic review and synthesis of research literature, and prepare them to conduct their own secondary research project on a topic of their choosing. Students should gain a deeper understanding of the conceptual, methodological and logistical problems that may be encountered when conducting research independently under supervision. Students will have a supervisor for guidance throughout the process of research from developing a research idea, to sourcing and analysing secondary data, and writing up the findings.

Learning Outcomes

Conduct a mini-systematic review of the research literature in accordance with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines

Formulate and communicate a research plan that is realistic in terms of time and effort required for the various stages of the research and provides an indication of the objectives and outcomes of the study.
3.
Select a methodology that is appropriate for the research question.
4.
analyse secondary data within the accepted parameters and conventions of the chosen methodology
5.
Report research findings paying due regard to the conventions of peer reviewed psychological research and demonstrating specialist psychological knowledge

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:This module is primarily undertaken by the student in the form of secondary data research, secondary data analysis and project write-up. However, students are encouraged to maintain regular contact with their supervisor. Systematic reviews, including synthesis of both quantitative and qualitative research. How to search and critique the literature.
Additional Information:Students will design and conduct a mini-systematic review as well as a significant piece of research in the field of Psychology. A major aspect of the development of any research project is to structure research ideas within an acceptable framework that may be subjected to peer review. After formulation of initial research ideas, students are encouraged to discuss these with their supervisor and to agree a plan of action before the research commences.
