Aims
1. To provide students with a solid foundation for understanding the basic theories in transpersonal psychology, both in relation to contemporary psychology in general and in terms of transpersonal psychology’s historical and interdisciplinary significance.
2. To encourage personal reflection on, and critical engagement with, the essential principles of transpersonal psychological approaches engaging mind, heart, and body.
3. To enable students to critically evaluate contemporary issues such as bioethics, values, and the community and societal impact of transpersonal psychological approaches in various fields of human activity
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the main theories in transpersonal psychology, and be capable of arguing their relative strengths and limitations.
2.
Convey their reasoned evaluation of the transformative, emancipatory, developmental, and health-related impact of transpersonal psychology in individual and societal contexts.
3.
Critically assess the contribution of transpersonal psychology in relation to other branches of psychologies and related disciplines.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:• Theories of Transpersonal Psychology:
o Grof and related theories
o Tart and related theories
o Antecedents (e.g. Jung & Maslow)
• Mind and Self in transpersonal psychology:
o Ego-transcendence, human development, and community: Wilber, Vaughn, Ferrer
o Clinical theories: Daniels, Wall, Goleman
• Embodiment and Transformation:
o Psychosomatic aspects of spirituality: Lukoff, Greenwell
o Interdisciplinary comparisons: transpersonal psychology as the “fourth force” in psychology (Frager and Hastings)
Additional Information:This module is a core module on a fully online, distance learning MSc programme. All activities take place via the Collaborative Learning Environment (CLE) into which students will be inducted at the commencement of the programme.
The term "online" under Delivery Options includes teaching delivered through synchronous webinars and through asynchronous forums.
