Aims
1. To enable students to become immersed in the research process as it operates in the areas of psychology related to the subject-matter of the programme.
2. To guide students in gaining knowledge and experience of the skills entailed in conducting research in this domain, including those concerned with literature searches, writing a research proposal that includes a submission for ethical approval, developing an appropriate research design, conducting data collection and analysis, and report-writing.
3. To facilitate informed discussion amongst students focusing on their own and their fellows’ research.
4. To encourage students to recognise the value in, and practice the skill of, communicating complex information to a non-specialist audience in ways consonant with the contemporary use of social media.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate the ability to plan, conduct, and report an empirical investigation.
2.
Convey the details of the research to others using appropriate styles of presentation (written report, or online seminar, or blog-style post) and to a level appropriate to the style of presentation.
3.
Demonstrate fundamental research skills such as literature searching, hypothesis/question formation, data collection and analysis, presentation of findings, and critical assessment of conclusions and implications.
4.
Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the specific methodology chosen for the research, and of the ways in which it has been constructively adapted to the specific research focus.
5.
Employ professional standards and ethical procedures toward individuals and organisations participating in or assisting with research investigations.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:• A series of general webinars will cover the following:
o Introduction to the module
o Writing a research proposal
o Sampling
o Data collection
o Data analysis
o Writing up the dissertation
• Specific content related to the student’s choice of research topic will be covered in one-to-one supervision sessions
Additional Information:This module is a core module on a fully online, distance learning MSc programme. All activities take place via the Collaborative Learning Environment (CLE) into which students will be inducted at the commencement of the programme.
The term "online" under Delivery Options includes teaching delivered through synchronous webinars and through asynchronous forums.
