Aims

To provide an understanding of advocacy and mooting and to be able to argue a case on appeal to an appellate court.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate an ability to select key research issues and to identify relevant primary and secondary sources of information.
2.
Demonstrate an ability to apply gained legal knowledge to complex problems, to reflect upon and evaluate this application and to draw logical reasoned
3.
Demonstrate an ability to evaluate and rank unfamiliar arguments in the light of established statute law, judicial decisions and authoritative legal commentary
4.
Demonstrate an ability to present an argument in a way which is comprehensible to others and which addresses their particular concerns or questions.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:This module provides, in a practical context, experience and practise in mooting and advocacy. The following areas will be covered during the formal sessions: • Understanding the legal grounds of appeal • Correct and appropriate ways to address a court • Correct ways to cite judgments and other material • The hierarchy of law reports • Public speaking • Mooting skills • Skeleton Arguments
