Aims
To provide students with insight to global trends in port administration, governance and management which includes the appraisal of a range of contemporary security issues affecting the maritime and ports sectors, including an analysis of the effectiveness of mitigation policies and practices.
Learning Outcomes

Identify and evaluate global trends in port functions, administration and governance

Analyse the specific security hazards affecting the maritime and port sector in the present day and the relevant legislation on the fields of maritime and port security

Appraise the merits of public and private sector involvement in port affairs

Evaluate and apply the principles to a selection of relevant case study examples in order to identify best practice

Additional Information:This module provides students with an overview of the global port industry and the evolving role of ports. Students will gain appreciation of the diverse functions of port authorities and examine the public interests and commercial factors that influence the administration of ports at national level, and governance of ports at the corporate level. This module examines a range of contemporary issues through the analysis of a series of relevant case studies. Students are introduced to some of the overarching legislation and are able to appraise its effectiveness.
