Aims

To develop an understanding of the key influences affecting the international trade market, with particular reference to the impact they have on global logistics flows, and an insight into freight transport operations on an international scale, with particular reference to the role of intermodality the law and practice in relation to export sales and the movement of goods.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate trade patterns within the wider geopolitical arena and a critical understanding of the range of transport options available to an international shipper

Analyse the roles and effects of international trade bodies, and the regulations and agreements on international trade

Appraise current issues affecting the global transport market and the effectiveness of multimodal transport systems in satisfying shippers' needs
4.
Critically examine the legal principles underpinning the international trade market.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:International trade flows and trends Commodity trades – dry & liquid bulks, commodity markets, trade in goods – consumer goods, industrial goods Roles of government bodies – WTO, World Bank, and other trans-national bodies. Government controls – international trade regulations, free trade agreements, international trade controls, Voluntary Export Restraints and other restrictions on trade. Transport modes and terminals International trade and freight distribution choices International transport and trends – sea, aviation, road, rail Financial, environmental and technological developments Intermodal transport operation and system design Policy issues Introduction to English Legal System Export contracts under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 INCOTERMS: CIF & FOB etc Bills of Lading & related documents; multimodal contracts Codified and Common Law rules governing carriage of goods International Carriage Conventions: Hague-Visby Rules, Hamburg Rules & Rotterdam Rules
Additional Information:This module familiarises students with the range of transport options available to an international shipper to provide and insight into operational and economic matters and to develop a framework for transport mode selection. The module seeks to identify and evaluate the commercial law basis for international contracts of export sales and carriage. It will examine how cargo claim conflicts arise, and how such disputes are settled. Lecture: Slides and slide notes for self-study. Tutorial: Online activities and exercises with teacher feedback.
