Aims

This module aims to advance clinical knowledge of therapeutics and to provide students with the skills to apply this expertise to the appropriate management of a range of commonly encountered disease states and therapeutic problems seen in secondary care.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:• Quality /hierarchy of evidence in clinical practice • Disease management in patients with multiple co-morbidities • Clinical therapeutics for a range of commonly encountered conditions which may include: o Endocrine disorders – e.g. diabetes, disorders of adrenal and thyroid gland o Cardiovascular diseases –e.g. Ischaemic heart disease (including acute coronary syndrome), arrhythmias, heart failure, thromboembolism, stroke o Acute and chronic kidney disease o Rheumatoid arthritis and gout o Medicines licensing issues in children o Epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease o Depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder o Asthma and COPD o Antimicrobial stewardship o Commonly encountered infections – e.g. respiratory tract, skin, urinary tract o Healthcare-acquired infections o HIV and AIDS o Upper gastrointestinal disorders o Inflammatory bowel disease o Management of chronic liver disease o Management and prevention of common post-operative problems – e.g. VTE, infection pain, nausea, vomiting and constipation o Medicines optimisation in critical care – sedation, infection, altered drug handling, stress ulcer prophylaxis, intravenous fluids For each therapeutic area covered there will be consideration of acute and chronic management; high risk drugs; clinical pharmacokinetics

Additional Information:The material learnt in this module will be applied by students to the completion of patient cases in the Developing Clinical and Professional Pharmacy Practice
