Aims
The aim of this module is to enable healthcare professionals to develop clinical skills to facilitate effective assessment, decision making, treatment and review of patients.
The module requires students to demonstrate learning outcomes via OSCE assessments. Students have a maximum of 2 attempts over a maximum period of 6 months after the normal completion point for the module (6 months from enrolment when studied alone, or 12 months when studied as an option in 35639 or 35773) in which to demonstrate that they meet these learning outcomes.

Evaluate the needs of an individual patient by applying effective consultation and clinical assessment skills.

Choose and adopt common diagnostic aids to aid clinical decision making and monitor response to therapy
3.
Critically assess patient care to inform a working diagnosis, formulate a treatment plan and assess patient response
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Accurate assessment, history taking, and effective communication and consultation with patients and their parents/carers
A knowledge of the range of models of consultation and appropriate selection for the patient
Formulating a working diagnosis
Confirmation of diagnosis/differential diagnosis – further examination, investigation, referral for diagnosis
Principles and methods of patient monitoring
Chemical and biochemical methods for monitoring the treatment of the condition(s) for which the pharmacist intends to prescribe on qualification and responses to results.
Clinical examination skills relevant to the condition(s) for which the pharmacist intends to prescribe or provide advice.
Recognition and responding to common signs and symptoms that are indicative of clinical problems. Use of common diagnostic aids for assessment of the patient’s general health status; e.g. stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, tendon hammer, examination of the cranial nerves.
Assessing responses to treatment against the objectives of the treatment plan/clinical management plan
Working knowledge of any monitoring equipment used within the context of the treatment/clinical management plan
Identifying and reporting adverse drug reactions
Management options including non‐drug treatment and referral

Additional Information:This module aims to provide pharmacist with the clinical skills needed to develop and support their practice.
If undertaken with modules 7111CPPHAR (Therapeutics in Specialist Clinical Practice) and 7115CPPHAR (Prescribing Effectively in Practice), and students have met the required criteria at the point of enrolment, they can gain a Practice Certificate in Independent Prescribing.
