Aims
The first stage - to undertake an extensive piece of applied research with guidance from a selected tutor on a topic either directly or indirectly related to the subject of Architecture. To develop a programme of research and activity using both primary and secondary material - whilst sourcing appropriate information from many and varied sources.
The second stage is to prepare sufficient material to allow a tutor and a Study Panel to understand the focus and intent of the study - with reference to research methods and outcomes.
The final stage is to undertake the writing of the 'Specialist Study' which involves the preparation and development of the final assessed piece of the work. This is usually in an illustrated, written and bound form (two hard copies) - with one digital copy being deposited on Blackboard.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Investigate an architectural subject using a mix of sources (both primary and secondary) in order to develop an intelligent and correctly constructed dissertation.
2.
Evaluate and present the results of their research to both peers and assessors in an appropriate and organised way.
3.
Submit a substantial piece of referenced specialist research (using standard conventions) that have been agreed with both tutor and panel members.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:This module will take place in the Second Semester and will give the student the opportunity to work independently on a research area of their choice. It will develop skills which will be useful in career development and progression. The initial subject and tutor selection will take place in Semester One and this will be developed in Module 7111AR. This will give students sufficient time to establish initial plans of research and consider their topic in the wider context. The topic selection will be tutor led but students will have the opportunity to select a topic of their own choice under negotiation. The writing process will be guided by a series of seminars and essentially the outcome will be an academic dissertation.
Module Overview:
This module is taken in three stages: first you will undertake an extensive piece of applied research with guidance from a selected tutor on a topic either directly or indirectly related to the subject of Architecture. The second stage is to prepare sufficient material to allow a tutor and a Study Panel to understand the focus and intent of the study - with reference to research methods and outcomes. The final stage is to undertake the writing of the 'Specialist Study' which involves the preparation and development of the final assessed piece of the work.

Additional Information:Welcome to the Specialist Study module. This module provides the opportunity for you to produce a substantial piece of written work based upon extensive research of your chosen subject area as defined in 7111AR/3. It is the chance for you to develop ideas and explore in detail an area of the subject of Architecture which lies beyond the immediacy of the design process.
