Aims
To promote reflection on students’ theoretical and methodological orientation and help them situate their own work in relation to advances within the field;
To help students acquire skills and confidence in chairing discussion and presenting their own ideas;
To prepare for the writing phase by mapping out the different elements of the project and organising them into an appropriate structure
Learning Outcomes
1.
Outline and evaluate current scholarship in the field relating to their project
2.
Articulate an appropriate theoretical and methodological framework
3.
Demonstrate originality and critical awareness in conceiving and undertaking a research task, presenting findings in a suitable scholarly format
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Having encountered recent developments in the field in the Semester 1 module Contemporary Literary Studies, students continue to explore contemporary approaches as they relate to their own research. Under guidance from the module tutor and their supervisor, each student is asked to propose set reading related to their project, lead a group discussion evaluating its significance as an intervention in the field, and reflect on its application to their own work.
Further sessions consist of workshops from invited members of English staff on their own research trajectories, and practical sessions on key skills – refining a research question, compiling a literature review, preparing for a public presentation.
The module concludes with a presentation of current progress to fellow researchers in the English department, reflection on which forms the basis of the second assignment.
Where funds allow, the module also has the flexibility to incorporate a group research trip, for example to Gladstones Library in Hawarden, N Wales. The intention is to foster further interaction between students and other researchers in literary studies (staff and PhD students), and share ideas in a setting more conducive to general reflection.

Additional Information:This module is designed to align students’ learning about the field of literary studies with their thinking about their own project. Students will undertake a course of reading in recent scholarship that is determined by their own research interests, while regular workshop sessions help them compile a literature review and develop a structure for the writing stage of the project. At the end of the module students will be in a position to present their progress to a wider community of researchers including staff from the English department.
