This module will enable students to critique contemporary social work practice with a range of service user groups.

Module Content
Outline Syllabus:1. What is Social Work? Historical and contemporary perspectives
2. The organizational structure of social work
3. Human development and life course approaches
4. Psychological and sociological perspectives as they underpin social work practice
and values.
5. Contemporary practice and trends in UK social work settings.
6. Working with different service user groups
8. Anti-oppressive values – frameworks for good practice
9. Ethical frameworks for social work
10. Interagency working with families with a focus on domestic abuse, substance misuse
Module Overview:
This module enables you to review contemporary social work practice with a range of service user groups. It gives you the opportunity to relate academic teaching to your first year placement and reflect on a range of theories, values and ethics in relation to social work practice.
This module enables you to review contemporary social work practice with a range of service user groups. It gives you the opportunity to relate academic teaching to your first year placement and reflect on a range of theories, values and ethics in relation to social work practice.
Additional Information:The student will have the opportunity to relate academic teaching to their first year
placement and will have the opportunity to reflect on a range of theories, values and
ethics in relation to social work practice.
Students will also be directed to a number of other sources including core journals
such as the British Journal of Social Work, Journal of Social Work, Journal of Social
Policy, Disability and Society, International Journal of disability, Ageing and Society,
Journal of ageing studies, Ethics and Social Welfare.
All individual assessments must be passed in order to achieve an overall pass on the module.
The module has been mapped to the knowledge and skills statements (child and family social work and social workers in adult services)
