Aims
1. To deepen students' understanding of library, bibliographic, online and other facilities necessary for postgraduate research;
2. To assist students in recognizing and applying appropriate strategies for developing advanced level research projects;
3. To enhance students' capacities for evaluating strengths and weaknesses in the methodologies of researchers in their field;
4. To develop and nuance verbal communication skills, to enable the expression of complex ideas and conform to postgraduate-level standards for the presentation of written work.
Learning Outcomes

Identify and access appropriate archives and bibliographical resources;

Demonstrate an understanding of methodologies and theoretical approaches relevant to their own research interests; 

3.
Evaluate the methodologies of scholars in their own field; 

4.
Discuss advanced level research and present written work to a postgraduate-level standard.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Students will cover the following topics through a combination of presentations from staff, reflection on the progress of their own research skills, and discussion of set reading in which they will be invited to critique the methods of published research:
1. Using resources / key search techniques
2. Exploring, creating and analysing archives
3. Developing a research question
4. Defining methodology / engaging with theory
5. Applying analytical skills
6. Constructing and argument
7. Oral and written presentation skills
Module Overview:
This module introduces and develops research skills for students in English Studies. It is intended to guide them as they undertake postgraduate level study, helping them to develop high-level skills in recognising and evaluating research methods and reflecting on and developing their own research and academic writing skills. The module will also give you the opportunity to see yourself as part of a community of postgraduate researchers, and present your ideas to peers accordingly.
